VA Dealing with Delays of Post-9/11 GI BIll Benefits

As of August of this year the Department of Veterans Affairs began offering the new Post-9/11 GI Bill. Due to the timing of the initial start-up of this new GI bill, veterans have been experiencing delays in receiving their tuition and living expenses through the program. Up to 30,000 Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans are still waiting for the VA to distribute checks. After weeks of complaints about the delays, Veterans Secretary Eric Shinseki announced that the VA would issue emergency checks worth up to $3,000 to students waiting on Post-9/11 G.I. Bill benefits. The money has to be repaid once a student’s regular benefits kick in.
